Vesteria Monster Brainstorm

Hi guys,

We’re moving forward with our plan to diversify how monsters in Vesteria function to keep combat in the game unique. We want every new monster to have to be approached from different angles based on how they behave in the game and interact with players, and potentially other monsters.

I’m posting this to ask you guys, our community, to help provide ideas with us to make combat in Vesteria fun! If you have any ideas, I’d love to hear them out. If you want to provide your idea, post on this topic!

Don’t be afraid to invent new things. If you want a new status effect added into the game, post it! If you want the monster to split into smaller pieces, do it! Should the mobs be able to group up into a bigger monster? Heck yeah, post it! The sky is the limit.

What information to include…

  • Name
Give your monster a unique name

  • Level
What level should your monster be? This will influence the level players need to be to reasonably fight it.

  • Appearance
What does your monster look like? Try to be as detailed as you can, as if you were explaining it to someone who was going to build it.

  • Behavior and Mechanics
How does your monster interact in the world by itself, with players, and with other monsters?

Feel free to include any other information you feel you need to add to get your idea across.

Here’s an example:

Example of Venomous Spider
  • Name
    Venomous Spider

  • Level
This monster can be found at level 17

  • Appearance
It will look like a regular spider in Vesteria, however it will appear smaller (about 3x as small), have thinner legs, and be green with bigger fangs. As it walks, it leaves behind trails of green poison particles.

  • Behaviour and Mechanics
The Venomous Spider will avoid being near other spiders, and prefer to “guard” its own section of the spawn region. They’ll move pretty quickly and don’t do much damage on the initial hit. The bulk of their damage will be in that when you are damaged, you will be inflicted with a poisoned status effect that will deal 20 damage every second for 5 seconds. This can be refreshed by being hit by the spider again.

Approved Ideas (won’t necessarily be exactly as described):

Boundary Keeper by @Bilyyy123

Mimic by @BenD101

Elder Dragon by @TheOfficialSin

As always, I can’t promise your idea will be added but we’ll be sifting through this thread regularly and looking for ideas to implement into the game. If you like an idea, like the post.

As a small disclaimer, don’t feel like your idea was rejected just because I approve of a monster that is posted after yours. I regularly go over ideas posted here whenever I’m looking for certain things that we might need. We might not always need a fire monster, but eventually if we do need one I’ll be specifically combing the thread for those types of monsters. The order monsters get accepted doesn’t automatically mean your monster is not being considered anymore.

Thanks for all your ideas!

  • Name:
Spider Leader(I guess? I have no inspiration for names)

  • Level:
    ~19

  • Appearance:
Just like a normal spider, but this one is a bit larger, legs are thicker, and is a bit more blue

  • Behaviour:
When this spider is spawned, it’ll give all spiders in a close area buffs that’ll go away once that spider is either out of range or killed. The detection range for players is larger that normal spiders, along with the stats. The stats of the buffed spiders are lower that this spider’s stats, and it cannot buff it’s own species. Buffs don’t stack

Heck yea! I’ve been hoping more complex monsters would be added for ages now! :stuck_out_tongue:

  • As far as a new monster goes, maybe a water monster could be fun.
I don’t have any good names, but some kind of fish (maybe a pun?)

  • It would be a bit higher level than the spiders (Around 18 or so)

  • It looks like a fish (because it is a fish)

  • It would swim around inside water and spit projectiles at players. If a player comes within range of the fish, it will charge at them and attack.

  1. When in water, the fish takes half damage, encouraging the players to get it out of the water.
  2. If it charges at a player that is out of the water (and comes out of the water itself) , it becomes “beached” for a few seconds where it is unable to move or attack, leaving it open to attacks.
  3. It would be found in bodies of water, maybe surrounding the hunter city and path leading to the Colosseum. It could also be found deep in the beach with crabs on it.

Inb4 someone recommends a gnome monster

  • Dire Wolf / Wolf Pack

  • Level 25 - 30

  • Giant Wolf, Grey and white coat to blend into its snowy mountain environment (think like how the dire wolves from GOT look, where there can be a couple patterns that spawn) as an alpha of each “pack” with 5-7 Normal wolves spawning as followers.

  • Will lock on to players and howl to attract the rest of their pack to a weak enemy. Leaps through air (like old warrior leap) to pounce onto its opponents. Will grab player with teeth, this makes it so players lose all of Their mobility while taking a sizable chunk of damage over duration (5 seconds). This, as well as my pirates idea, are mobs to prioritize fighting while in a party, as this would be almost impossible to 1v1 an entire party of these. Would give incentive to fight while in a group with tanks, dps, and ranged attacks. Maybe to further incentivise this, an exp share effect could be added to parties? This would also have the effect of training parties for dungeons and raids.

  • I think of this as being a high level Redwood pass mob in the snow peaked mountains.

  • Name
    Brute

  • Level
    20

  • Appearance
Strong and muscly. Somewhat like an orc except bigger and stronger. Probably green. Will have claws and
sharp teeth and versatile. (Players should not approach this monster unless heavily equipped and
    suitable enough to fight it)

  • Behavior Mechanics
Will try to hit you with it’s massive fists. Will also spit venomous toxic acid at you if at a far range. Will be EXTREMELY hard to kite if at a close range (which is why you need to be heavily equipped to fight it). if far enough, it will run out of energy and stop chasing you. Will drop a massive pool of loot if killed (spawn rarity will be the same as the mushroom boss) will probably be found in the enchanted forest.

  • Level 11

  • A purple, generic looking oyster

  • Isn’t very territorial, won’t aggro unless attacked. Will go out of spawn zone if it is aggroed. Attacks by whipping its tongue/foot, does fair damage with fair windup.

  • Found in Scallop Shores

Bandits and Marauders:

level 25 to 27 enemies that will use diffrent kind of player base armor depeding on what rank/class their using.

You’d think that there would be criminals and other vermin around the world who does not aby by the law.

They to should also be able to use similar abilities like regular players. There should be diffrent kinds of those enemies aswell that will for example use the warrior class or the other of the classes .And depending on their level they will use different kinds of abilities.

Players will also have the chance of looting the weapon/armor that their wearing. I’d also be cool to see if they talked/taunted the players. Like saying: “You never should have come here* and stuff similar like that. and when the Random big boss event starts they boss name should be called “The great knight Bazuso” aka " the thirty man slayer” who will be wearing a full set of heavy metal themed onion armor and would be using a huge gaint 2 handed axe, which he’d have the chance of drop it as a level 25 warrior themed weapon.

This will also be easier to add as any of the other enemy design if not easier to add so. Since you guys could just straight out take the assets from the already exsiting player abbilites and player made armor.

Encounters

Maybe in the future you guys would consider add in random events where such as these:

  • Bandit encounter

Bandits will try to rob a player saying: Your money or your life which will give the player to ethier give them money or be forced to fight them.

  • Assasssin encounter:
These will be high level enemies that will ambush players during the road. Depeding on what the player actions has been ethier good or bad and they will mostly just come after you since you have a high bounty depeding on what you have done.

  • Goblin Shaman.

  • LvL 13.

  • Like a regular goblin but instead of a stick or a rock, it has a wooden staff (like the starter mage staff but a bit darker). It has Purple paint over its body with different symbols. It has a bone neckless and a tribal mask (the tribal mask is made out of wood but it’s painted green with red stripes). Its skin is slightly darker and they are just a tiny bit bigger.

  • This Goblin acts like a stronger version of the regular goblins but instead of a rock throw, It has the ability to heal the goblins around him.
You only find 1-2 of these bad boys in a pack.
they will stick VERY close to their brethren when out of combat, but do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to run away from the player once they enter combat (but will attack him if they are unable to run/the player gets too close to them).
They stand stationary when they cast their healing ability which takes about 3-5 seconds to cast but can be interrupted by attacking them (they won’t run away from the player while casting this ability). The healing ability heals 50% of the goblins total HP so this enemy is a high priority target.
If this enemy spawns in as a mini-boss it won’t run away. Its healing ability is replaced by a minion summon ability that spawns 4 minion goblins (see in the next post).

Mutated Mushroom

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Name:
Mutated Mushroom

Level
Level 2, 4,7

Appearance
Just your ordinary garden variety Vesteria Mushroom... except with an interchangeable amount of heads.. and limbs...

Behavior and Mechanics
When regular Mushrooms(any kind) spawn, there is a chance they may mutate and become Mutated Mushrooms. These mutated mushroom have the same attacks as before, but a boosted HP and DMG.

Infected Mushroom

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Name
Infected Mushroom

Level
Level 4

Appearance
It's a green mushroom man! It's just a regular Mushroom mesh with a greenish red texture on it.

Behavior and Mechanics
When a mushroom is left alive for too long, it gets prone to infection :c. Once infected, their entire attack moves turn into more support moves and overtime DPS. Infected Mushrooms hit for less damage than its sister mushroom, and uses a variety of sneezes and coughs to infect the player, weakening the player's attacks, defense, and mobility. The Infected Mushroom also has a green radius around it. If a healthy Mushroom is in the radius for a time period, the Mushroom becomes an Infected Mushroom. The Infected Mushroom, when killed, gives less EXP and Coin than a regular one. Due to the fact that the Infected Mushroom drops less EXP and Coin and infects other Mushrooms to do the same thing, the player will naturally target the Infected Mushroom in order to prevent the spread of the Infection.

Spite

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Name
Spite

Level
Dependant on the Area

Appearance
Tiny lil wall suckers these things are. They're mini versions of mushrooms turned onto a horizontal axis and placed on a tree! It's not really as simple as that, but you get the point. Whatever wall or object they're currently sticking too, they suck on it and try to break it down. This gives an expanding and contracting animation.

Behavior and Mechanics
Spites can be found anywhere in the entire game(to keep the famed Mushroom theme of Vestera). Spites just want to be left alone to break down whatever they're eating, but they don't like anything coming in their radius. So if you walk near one, they'll aggro on you. Their main defense is spitting acid or toxic mushroom juice (whatever you want to call it) onto whatever is invading their area. On occasion, Spites will simply explode into spores creating a cloud around the player. This cloud lasts for a minute and weakens the player to Mushrooms.

Humanoid, taller than a regular player and slimmer than one, as well. Usually wearing rugged clothing, darker or lighter depending on the area. Their goal is to fit into their surroundings.

Behavior and Mechanics
Bandit Scouts travel separately, usually taking the high ground in the area alongside roads and paths. Since they're just scouts, they don't attack automatically. They do become aggressive once attacked, featuring a serious of ranged attacks, if possible. Not very hard to kill, but not much reward in it, either.

Tree Ent Saga

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

Elder Ent

Name
Elder Ent

Level
Level 20

Appearance
As tall as a tree, in fact, it is a tree. A moving tree!

Behavior and Mechanics
Trees don't quite like it when you disrupt their quiet time in the forest, so they attack first if you walk within their radius. They're slow moving, but tall. Most common attacks are stomp and thrash. In stomp, they'll simply try to crush you, if you're in the radius, you'll be knocked to the ground for half a second. Thrashing will throw you to the side as a giant limb comes down at you. If all else fails, the large ent will start shaking and rain down millions(like ten) of branches onto the ground.

Tree Ent

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Name
Tree Ent

Level
Level 17

Appearance
A regular Tree Ent is younger than an Elder Ent. Not as tall as a tree, but looks just like one.

Behavior and Mechanics
These trees are a bit more impatient than the wise Elder Ents. If you're in front of them, they'll come for you. If you're behind them, they won't notice you. They move just like an elder tree, except much quicker. Sadly, they can't stomp because they're not big enough, but they do like to spin and hit everything in their path. Watch out though, they might start throwing some branches.

Budding Ent

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Name
Budding Ent

Level
Level 13

Appearance
At first, Budding Ents look like a pile of leaves on the ground, usually to be stepped on. Watch out, once you do step on them, they rise up to about the height of a Goblin. Don't let the Vegans fool you, these 'harmless' little trees are actually monstrous killing machines.

Behavior and Mechanics
The Budding Ent can't harm you much, it's too young to even move from its position. It will call in nearby Tree Ents and Elder Ents to its aid, though. So watch out, this little scout has some big friends.

Behavior and Mechanics
Karen is 34 with three children and two dogs. She is usually seen in the Market Area of Nilgarf, mostly unhappy and certainly unapologetic. Coming near her will immediately engage you in a conversation you cannot escape. In the conversation you are told that you are in a lot of trouble and that you're going to get fired. Karen has a variety of unique moves such as Sucker Punch and Late Night Defense Training. Karen can't kill you, but she is not invincible. The only way to defeat Karen is by telling her that you are the manager.

Jirakey

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃
Name
Jirakey

Level
Level 22

Appearance
Just your average middle age overweight psychology teacher(It's where I got my inspiration from). Due to the Jirakey's poor life choices and stressful style of life, the Jirakey puts on more weight than other creatures because of their weight, they also look shorter than other creatures. Another side-effect of the Jirakey's lifestyle is their balding scalps. As time progress, the Jirakey's hairline will recede.

Behavior and Mechanics
Jirakeys can only be found in the Mage area, they're knowledge wielding creatures. Its idle behavior consists of pacing and looking at passers, but never intentionally engaging. The Jirakey presents themselves as confident, but in actuality they're lonely and would like a friend, making them less aggressive to outsiders. When attacked, the Jirakey will pull out a hidden spell book and start casting enchantments using big words thinking and slow talking in a condescending tone. This attack lowers the defense of the player. For as long as the player is in the Jirakey's radius, the player will take damage. If Jirakeys go unnoticed for a long enough time period they will begin Stress Eating and putting on weight. This greatly increases the Jirakey's attack power and reward gain, but if the Jirakey over eats, the Jirakey will die.

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

A lot of the creatures are meant to exist in the same area to give a more diverse open world experience.
More to come later on,

This is just for Behaviors and Mechanics

Behaviors/Mechanics:

Calling other monsters to help: Basically any monster you choose to have this feature will be able to alert its own kind or possibly different monsters to help fight a player causing some organized attacks to possibly go wrong if different monsters join in.

Ranged monsters back up: Will have the ability to back up as they use ranged attack if you come within a certain distance

Hit and run attacks: The title speaks for itself, a monster hits you and runs away and repeats

Throwing random objects: A certain mob can use this to find a random object from the terrain and use that to throw at a player doing more or less damage depending on the object

Monsters fighting each other: This mechanic could be used for a quest to get two or more monster types to fight against each other or even start a war

Monster get stronger as it dies: Maybe for a metal monster it will take damage and parts of its metal piece that act as armor or something will fall off and could be used for the monster to attack with or if the monster is big enough as debris to crush players

Picking up players: Since fall damage will seem to be a thing a big/strong enough monster could pick up a player and thrown them off a cliff to cause a lot of fall damage. Possibly introducing new armor so that players take reduced fall damage

Didn’t reread any or these and I quickly put all these ideas from the top of my head so don’t judge me

Flower Form

  • Looks like a huge flower with eaten petals.

  • Color of flower varies from blue and red, easily distinguishable.

  • Has teeth protruding out of the petals.

Bulb Form

  • Bulb that has roots that are used as legs.

  • Has a short stem that connects to the root-legs.

  • It has small black-eyes with no pupils that appear on the sides of the bulb.

Behavior and Mechanics

  1. Upon looks from faraway it looks like a normal flower except it has teeth sticking out of petals.

  2. Will quickly snap its mouth once it senses anything on it.

  3. If it closes its mouth and finds nothing is in it, then it’ll look around, walking around looking for food it can eat. When walking it turns from Flower form to Bulb Form, so it folds its flower petals into a bulb and hides its teeth.

  4. If it doesn’t find anything it’ll go back to where it originally was and will go back into flower-mode.

  5. If it does find something, it’ll trap it in its mouth and will slowly absorb what is in it.
However, if it gets hit enough, it’ll let go of whatever is in the mouth.

  6. These guys inhabit the Enchanted Forest since they enjoy eating goblins.
